Why Is Coffee So Protective?

Researchers aren’t totally sure why coffee helps the liver so much, but the working theory points to its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Coffee contains over a thousand biologically active compounds—including caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and diterpenes like cafestol and kahweol—which may all work together to protect liver cells from damage.

Coffee’s been linked to lots of other health wins too, like:

  • Lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes

A Few Caveats…

There are a couple things this study didn’t look at. For one, it focused solely on alcohol-related cirrhosis—not liver issues caused by obesity or other conditions. And it didn’t dive into the types or prep methods of coffee, so whether espresso or French press is better for your liver? Still a mystery (for now).

Also—and this is important—coffee is not a free pass to binge drink. It might help reduce the damage, but it’s not a magic shield.
