Artificial Sweeteners: Serious Health Risk?

We all know consuming too much sugar isn’t good for us. But are artificial sweeteners fair game?

According to new research from Marquette University, it could also pose a serious health risk.

So what’s the danger?

After giving rats aspartame, an artificial sweetener, for 3 weeks straight, they found it impaired their blood vessels, something often observed during the shift to pre-diabetes.

This means that, if human studies prove true, consuming artificial sweeteners could also raise your risk of diabetes.

Obviously, that’s not good news. So how do you satiate your sweet tooth without putting your health at risk?

These 3 alternative could help:

– Try Stevia

Derived from the Stevia rebaudiana plant, this is a much safer way to sweeten your favorite meals, and has even been shown to reduce high blood pressure.

– Coconut sugar

Although it still contains fructose, it also contains helpful nutrients such as iron, zinc, and potassium, so it’s not necessarily bad for you. It also contains a fiber called inulin, which helps slow glucose absorption.

– Yacon syrup

Derived from the yacon plant in South America, it’s packed full of soluble fibers that increases good bacteria in the intestine, keeping your body healthy. It’s also used as a weight loss aid.

Now that’s an easy (and safe) way to get your sugar fix.

Remember: Sugar isn’t bad in small amounts, so make sure to practice moderation whenever possible!
