To lower your risk, simply eat more fresh fruits and vegetables–it’s a great way to maintain a healthy liver.
In research appearing in PLOS, adults who ate fresh fruits and vegetables frequently were less likely to receive a diabetes diagnosis 5 years later, as well as having a lower mortality rate. Frozen or canned fruits did not count towards this total, however, as they are usually packed with additives that reduce their nutritional value.
Having at least one serving per day should be everyone’s goal, stress health experts.
So eat up–it’s good for a longer life, and a healthier liver.
Other Ways to Reduce Diabetes
Eating fresh fruits and vegetables aren’t the only way to keep your diabetes risk low. To minimize your risk, try out these diet hacks:
– Eat more protein from plant sources. A study in the British Journal of Nutrition shows that eating plant proteins, as opposed to animal proteins, greatly reduced the risk of diabetes among men between 42 and 60 years of age.
– Stop eating out. Fast food in particular heightens the risk of this disease, even if you’re making healthier food choices. To play it safe, opt for home cooked meals instead.
– Eat more broccoli sprouts. Research shows that sulforaphane, found in broccoli, helps regulate glucose production, reducing the risk of pre-diabetes.
